What is a diagnostic ultrasound?
A diagnostic ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the body’s internal organs and structures.
How do I refer myself for an ultrasound exam?
Appointments for an ultrasound exam are made either once we receive a referral from a healthcare professional (e.g. your GP, physiotherapist, consultant, etc) or once you have been assessed by one of our senior doctors. This is to ensure you undergo the correct investigation. Please refer to the relevant section within Patients for further information.
What is a therapeutic ultrasound?
A therapeutic ultrasound is similar to a diagnostic ultrasound but there is also a procedure, such as an injection being carried out at the same time.
Is ultrasound safe?
Yes, ultrasound scans are safe and non-invasive imaging techniques that do not use ionising radiation.
Is there anything I need to do before my ultrasound exam?
Depending on the type of exam, patients may be asked to drink water and avoid eating for a certain period of time before the exam. Patients may also be asked to wear loose-fitting clothing and remove any jewellery or metallic objects that could interfere with the exam.
Will I feel any pain during the ultrasound exam?
Not with diagnostic ultrasound exam. These are typically painless. However, some patients may experience mild discomfort or pressure as the ultrasound transducer is moved over the skin. With therapeutic ultrasound, there may be some discomfort as often we use injections – but this is minimised by the use of local anaesthetic.
How long does an ultrasound exam take?
The length of the exam depends on the type of exam being performed and the area of the body being imaged. In general, most diagnostic ultrasound scans take between 10 and 60 minutes.
Can I bring someone with me to the ultrasound exam?
Yes, patients are welcome to bring a friend or family member with them to the exam. Due to the limited space in the exam room, we ask that only one additional person accompany the patient.
How soon will I get the results of my ultrasound?
The results of your ultrasound scan will be reviewed by a consultant radiologist or a senior sonographer at Aurelium Health. The report will be sent to your healthcare provider, typically within two working days. Your healthcare provider will then discuss the results with you and provide any necessary follow-up care.
