Self–Referring Patients

Before your ultrasound scan

We will arrange an initial consultation with one of our senior doctors before your ultrasound scan. This is to ensure you have been correctly assessed and referred for the correct investigation for your clinical condition. If the doctor concludes that an ultrasound scan is not the most appropriate investigation for your clinical needs, you will be provided with a letter with details of the most appropriate investigation for you. In this situation, we are happy to direct you to an appropriate healthcare facility, if relevant/appropriate.

This initial consultation may be on the same day as your ultrasound scan and is dependent on the availability of the consultant radiologist/sonographer.

At this stage, we will answer any questions you may have about your upcoming ultrasound scan appointment and will clearly set out the details and cost of your recommended procedure. If applicable, we will provide you details of any preparation that you may need to do before your ultrasound scan, for example, avoiding food and drink. We will provide you with this information via email or post depending on your preference.

During your ultrasound scan

Ultrasound scans are typically painless and you should be able to resume normal activity immediately after this procedure. However, some patients may experience mild discomfort or pressure as the ultrasound transducer is moved over the skin. With therapeutic ultrasound scans, there may be some discomfort, for example, if an injection is recommended. We will discuss this with you before the procedure and we will utilize options available to minimize any discomfort such as the use of local anesthetic, if appropriate.

You will need to remove or lift up any clothing around the area that needs to be scanned. We will use clinical gowns and/or drapes to preserve your dignity. Please note our team has both male and female consultant radiologists and you can request an appointment with a doctor of your choice.

The radiologist/sonographer performing your scan will give you a verbal summary during this appointment. They will subsequently analyse the scan findings and provide a full written report within two working days of your follow-up consultation.

After your ultrasound scan

The results of your ultrasound scan will be reviewed by a consultant radiologist or a sonographer. The report will then be sent to the doctor who assessed you at your initial consultation. We will arrange a follow-up consultation with the same doctor where they will discuss the results with you and provide any necessary follow-up care.

The full written report will be made available to you within two working days of your follow-up consultation.

Please note the total cost of the initial and follow-up consultations is £125. The cost of your ultrasound scan is separate and a written quotation will be provided.
